Texas raises small quantities of nectarines, raspberries, persimmons, pears, plums and other types of fruit on small farms and pick-your-own operations.
Nectarines Commercial volume of these sweet "fuzzless peaches" comes from the Rio Grande Valley in May. Nectarines are also harvested in June and July in Central and Northeast Texas for sale at farmers markets and roadside stands.
Pears Large, juicy yellow pears are picked in various areas across the state from May until August. Peak production is in June. Consumers will find Texas pears at
supermarkets, farmers’ markets, roadside stands and pick-your-own operations.
Persimmons Brilliant orange persimmons make colorful decorations and delicious eating. Texas cultivates sweet-tasting oriental persimmons. The fruit, which is high in vitamin A, is eaten both fresh and dried. Harvest takes place in early fall. Persimmons are sold in grocery stores and at farms.
Plums Small yellow and red plums with sweet, juicy flavor are grown in East and Central Texas. Where supplies are plentiful, Texas plums are marketed in grocery stores. Numerous pick-your-own operations also offer plums. Harvest takes place in June and July. |
