Mercedes Melon
"¡Ciaó, niños! That means 'Hi, Kids!' in Italian. I was named after the Italian city of Cantalupo, where cantaloupes were grown in the first century AD. Italians and Texans still love fresh melon today!

Melons like cantaloupes and honeydew are top Texas crops. Cantaloupes are high in beta-carotene, which your body turns into vitamin A. This vitamin helps your body grow healthy skin and hair. It is also important for proper bone growth and tooth development. Honeydew melons and cantaloupes are sources of vitamin C too. So, the next time you are in the mood for some Italian food, like spaghetti, try some sliced cantaloupe or honeydew melons for dessert."

Learn more about Texas melons:
  • Only two other states in the nation grow more cantaloupe and honeydew melons than Texas. About 11,000 acres of cantaloupes are planted in Texas. Honeydew melons are planted on about 2,500 acres.

  • Some people say it's hard to tell when melons are ripe and ready to eat. Here's the secret: just pick one up and shake it. If you can hear a good rattle of seeds along with a strong, sweet scent then it's perfect and ready to slice.
